What exactly is home health?
Home health care can improve the quality of life for those recovering from a hospital stay, fighting a terminal disease or nearing the end of life. Santé offers a variety of services provided to patients in the comfort of their home. This is to ensure everyone receives a compassionate continuum of care throughout their recovery. Services include skilled nursing, physical, occupational and speech therapy, social workers and home health aides.
Who would benefit from home health care?
Home health care services are beneficial to those looking to receive personalized care in the comfort of their home. Home health is one of the most common types of health care among seniors. Physical and occupational therapy isn’t just for those who are suffering from pain or illness. Many seniors choose therapy as a preventative measure to maintain their strength and independence.
Physical therapy is a type of treatment that helps restore and improve the functionality of the body. Physical therapists use specific techniques to help reduce pain and increase mobility for better strength and balance. Regular physical therapy sessions can be extremely beneficial to improving flexibility and strength, which can even help prevent falls.
Some of the benefits of physical therapy include:
- Improving endurance
- Rehabilitation following surgery
- Enhancing posture (walking technique)
- Increasing mobility and strength
With occupational therapy, a patient can improve their quality of life by building up the skills they need to restore their independence. For someone who is terminally ill or recovering from a hospital stay, sometimes even taking a shower is something that is very difficult. It might require adapting the environment or instilling confidence to keep trying.
Santé hospice nurses visit the patient wherever they reside, providing direct care to the patient and keeping the personal physician informed and updated about the patient’s condition. Our nurses also teach the family and/or other caregivers how to care for the patient. Home health aides and assistants provide personal care such as bathing and grooming, under the direction of the RN, as well as assistance with other activities of daily living.
