How Senior Care Facilities are Rated

Nursing homes have come a long way. Many of today’s senior care facilities are bright, modern and welcoming, offering high-tech medical care and assisted living. The focus is on improving quality of life for all seniors, whether they need post-acute care following a prolonged illness or daily help with tasks at home.

If you’re looking at care options for a loved one, you’re probably wondering how care facilities are rated. Rest assured that the five Santé locations throughout Maricopa County and Tucson are certified by Medicare. In addition, you’ll want to look at consumer and national media ratings to help you choose the best care facility for your parent or relative.

Medicare Data

Around 15,000 Medicare-certified nursing homes and care facilities nationwide are rated on the official Medicare website. The site considers the following criteria.

  • Health inspections
  • Staffing
  • Quality of care

Medicare’s traditional star system makes it easy to tell how well the facility rates: 5 stars for an amazing experience; 1 star for a terrible facility. A score is provided for each of the three criteria above, plus the facility receives an overall score. Santé of Chandler, for example, rates “Above Average” or “Much Above Average” in every category, resulting in an overall score of 5 stars.

BBB Ratings

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) was created in 1912 to help promote, advance and confirm consumer trust. The BBB looks at consumer feedback and assigns a letter grade (A+ to F) to each business based on seven factors including registered complaints and transparent business practices. Santé’s Mesa, Chandler, Scottsdale and Surprise locations currently have A+ ratings from the Better Business Bureau.

What Consumers Say

There’s a reason so many consumers check Yelp when they’re looking for a restaurant, or use Angie’s List to find a reputable plumber. Consumer rating sites can help you judge how well a facility performs on a day-to-day basis. Remember that these sites can be easily skewed, though. For example, a home care facility could have one review from a disgruntled employee or customer that throws off its ratings.

Rather than looking at these generic sites, target industry-specific reviews on consumer or media sites. U.S. News & World Report is an authoritative source, compiling data from the federal government to rate care facilities on a 5-star scale. Santé’s Maricopa County care centers scored highly, with the Surprise and Chandler facilities at 4.5 stars or better.

Finding the Right Fit

Choosing a care facility for a loved one isn’t an easy task. Luckily, the BBB and Medicare rating systems can help you make a smart choice. Check ratings online, then setup a tour of your top choices.
