Helpful Websites For Seniors
It goes without saying that people are relying on the Internet more and more for social networking, education, reference, and entertainment. Computer use has quickly taken over the way we receive information and operate in the world. For some seniors, though, it can be a challenge to figure out how to use all of the resources available online. But, for those who are reasonably tech-savvy or who are open to learn, there are some great websites to consider. Here are some that receive our stamp of approval:
Social Networking Sites
There are dozens of social networking sites in existence, but not all are senior-friendly or even of interest to the aging population. We recommend opening an email account through any trusted provider such as Gmail to make communication with friends and family easy and convenient. In addition, we find that many of our clients love the interaction Facebook provides and find the platform to be user-friendly.
Sites like Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat can be short on real communication and harder to master on the tech side, but they can also be of interest to the tech-savvy senior.
Educational Sites
Some great sites exist for the sole purpose of helping seniors expand their knowledge and skills on a variety of topics. Some of our favorites include:
- The Senior’s Guide to Computers which provides everything you need to know about computers in order to use one proficiently
- Road Scholar which focuses on providing advanced education about destinations around the world
- Mayo Clinic which provides a plethora of doctor-written and approved information on health and wellness topics, including patient instructions and information on a variety of diseases and disorders
Websites for Senior Reference
The following websites cover a variety of topics, from the rights of seniors in long-term facilities to the ways seniors can pay for their care.
- Medicare
- Administration on Aging
- Area Agency on Aging
- Alzheimer’s Association
- National Alliance for Caregiving
- AARP
Entertaining Websites
We love Suddenly Senior, which approaches aging lightheartedly and shares jokes, nostalgia, and trivia for seniors. Senior.net is also great in that it provides expanded information of hundreds of topics of interest to seniors, especially related to hobbies.
